This first “From the East” message is a bit non standard. A standard message probably has a section devoted to the current activities of the lodge and it’s officers followed by a remark or two about short term future plans such as rehearsals or degree work. Sandwiched somewhere in-between is generally an appeal to the members who are not active to come to a meeting and enjoy the fellowship. None of this seems to apply for this message as these first months of activities for Seminary Hill Daylight Lodge promise to be a bit more focused - as you can see by the schedule on the home page. In addition, the work of the Master of this lodge may also prove to be a bit non standard. When I was Master of my mother lodge, it was my prerogative (read that: DUTY!) to plan for the year – in its entirety! That meant not only scheduling for the year but creating a plan for presentations, meals, special events, appointing committees and. . . . .well, you get the picture! The trestleboard was all mine from start to finish. This new lodge is slated to operate a little differently. Although the prerogative of the Master is still in full force, the By Laws that we propose provides for an ‘in place’ support mechanism for his use. The Board of Directors are responsible for creating the menus for each meeting (and not the Junior Warden), to help establish and support educational programs and act as Trustees for lodge funds. They are to meet with the senior lodge officers every couple of months to be sure that the plans of the Trustees agree with the direction the lodge officers have agreed to. As other needs are identified, more committees will be formed. Using this type of format, the Master and Senior Officers will be managing groups of dedicated lodge members to the betterment of the lodge. It is hoped that this type of organization will help insure that we continue to improve ourselves in Masonry and focus on supporting our motto: “Conviviality and Caring” Fraternally, Jerry Leighton |
